June, 30th 2013 As we get closer to the eventual signing of the new immigration bill into law, Republicans would be well-advised to stop playing the dangerous balancing game of “having their cake and eating it too” with the immigration issue! The Republican party is trying to play a fine balancing act, by on the one hand allowing Marco Rubio to be identified as a leader of the bill in the Senate, but on the other hand still demonstrating some opposition to the provisions of the bill that many of the party faithful find offensive.
It is simply time for the Republican party to see the facts for what they are: Immigration reform is a “must”, and meaningful opposition to any reform will become political suicide for the party of Lincoln. If the party is...

April, 29th 2013 “Once I had thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were America.” Oscar Handlin’s opening words to the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Uprooted
“The President proposes to create a new Department of Homeland Security, the most significant transformation of the U.S. government in over half-century by largely transforming and realigning the current confusing patchwork of government activities into a single department whose primary mission is to protect our homeland. The creation of a Department of Homeland Security is one more key step in the President’s national strategy for homeland security (emphasis added)."

April, 28th 2013 The Atlantic recently published an article by Adam Ozimek and Sean Rust entitled, “The Conservative Case for Immigration Reform”. This touched on one of the more fascinating issues related to the immigration debate. Namely, is immigration reform a Republican issue or a Democratic one? Given the shifting sand underneath the Republican party, this is an issue for which Republicans need to find an answer soon, lest they see national elections tilt to the left for the next generation.
As the writers of the Atlantic piece point out, there is an economic ideology-based path for the Republicans to get to immigration reform, without feeling as if they have “sold out” their base. Many core ideals of conservative thought, from the benefits...
April, 15th 2013 The headline caught my attention: “Ex-Goldman Sachs Trader Surrenders to FBI After Securities Fraud Probe”. Wow, I thought to myself. Really? Almost 5 years after the financial crisis, the government is finally going after Goldman? Is that possible? Did Goldman stop appointing Treasury secretaries and NY Federal Reserve presidents? How is it possible that finally, after all of these years, after all of the articles, whistle blowers and hearings that the government decided to go after Goldman? Did someone finally realize the absurdity of having taxpayers kick in $10B to save the world’s preeminent financial services firm, without asking the Gazzilionaire Goldman partners to kick in some money?
Did the government...

March, 1st 2013 While it takes years for policy arguments to settle into legislation, at some point the bill (no pun intended) comes due for small companies.
